South Coast House

 South Coast House 2012

The plan for this small beach house took time to solve; to capture the views, protect from cold winds, create privacy from neighbours, retain existing trees, sit with the fall of the land and meet a modest budget. The design also had to provide for additional space in the future.

The central protected courtyard deck provides a sunny, shielded outdoor space for year round use where visual connection east to the water and west to the bushland can be enjoyed.  An operable louvre roof to the courtyard creates an all-weather outdoor space.

The materiality of this lightweight building will necessarily be robust to the exterior, low maintenance and acknowledge the possibility of bushfire.  The interiors will have beach house simplicity and a select palette of materials including timber, plywood, and natural concrete.
