CLARE DESIGN      I    SYDNEY    I     GOLD COAST    I    SUNSHINE COAST

Lindsay + Kerry Clare are an award-winning husband and wife architectural team – collaborating to produce outstanding buildings. Clare Design has been producing architectural projects for more than 30 years including a diverse range of houses and major urban and public buildings consistently acknowledged for their rare combination of design excellence and high-level environmental performance. “The Clares’ ideas about experiencing natural light and ventilation are merged with their ideas about typology. They fuse ideas about type and climate into building form”. Their buildings allow occupants to engage with architecture and the world outside, reinforcing the essential connection with place.

Clare Design was established in 1979 on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. After close to 20 years of successful practice Lindsay + Kerry Clare were invited by the NSW Government Architect, Chris Johnson, to undertake the inaugural role of GAO Design Directors. In 1998 Clare Design moved to Sydney and the NSW GAO became its sole client for the next two years. Lindsay + Kerry led the design of many projects including the No. 1 Fire Station, the upgrade of Circular Quay Ferry Wharves, the Overseas Passenger Terminal upgrade and the National Environment Centre on the TAFE Thurgoona campus.

In 2000 Lindsay + Kerry became the founding directors of Architectus Sydney, serving as Design Directors from 2000-2010. During this period they produced notable projects including the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, the University of the Sunshine Coast Chancellery, the UNSW Village housing project and Wesley House in Brisbane.

Since 2010 Clare Design has continued to work from Sydney, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast on selected projects across Australia’s eastern seaboard including Docklands Library and Fitzroy Gardens Depot Workshop with the City of Melbourne, the Rockhampton Museum of Art, the Northern Territory Art Gallery, Bendigo Art Gallery, the Place of Indigenous Art + Culture at the University of Melbourne and selected residential projects. Larger projects are done in collaboration with selected architectural firms.

Alongside practice Kerry + Lindsay taught at the University of Newcastle as Professors of Practice 2011-2019 and continue their roles in teaching as Visiting Professors at the Abedian School of Architecture, Bond University.
